The Fight
to Achieve Global Democracy/ International Military Relations/I understand
"The fight to achieve global democracy" is very broad. An attempt to
narrow it down resulted in "The on-going Crisis in
Representative Democracy ''. This will examine the crises associated with
global representative democracy, including its fragility and factors that
threaten its foundation.
Over
the years, the state of global democracy has declined and resulted in a crisis.
Therefore, more countries are moving toward alternative leadership styles due
to the enhanced fragility of democracy, resulting from factors such as
political trust threatening its foundation.
Democracy
aims at empowering people's voices regarding their country's leadership and
governance. However, many factors have threatened the existence of the
democratic foundation. These include; trust in politicians and institutions,
where increased inequality for women, older adults, and minorities has
contributed to growing skepticism (Bachelet, 2022); interest in politics, which
is associated with misinformation and false promises that make people feel left
out when they are not met (Bachelet, 2022); and poor voter turn out, where over
the years citizens have lost faith in the power of democracy hence find their
voter impact irrelevant. Leaders tend to manipulate their roles and
responsibilities into selfish acts yet blame the outcomes on the failure of
democracy and human rights (Bachelet, 2022). These factors lead to the
fragility of people’s democracy, slowly chipping off on human rights. This has
resulted in a democracy crisis where restrictions have been set up in avenues
such as free expression, federal space, and media privilege, considered
essential for promoting democracy. The democratic crisis is evident in protests
by people seeking effective social and economic systems that work for everyone (Bachelet,
2022). Positive political interest has been undermined by the democratic crisis,
where attention is only drawn to negative cases from politicians. Therefore, to
counter the crisis, people should advocate for their democratic rights to
enable active participation in the country's governance.
The enhanced fragility of democracy results
from factors such as political mistrust and reduced interest, which has
threatened its foundation. This has led to a global representative democracy
crisis evident through decreased voter turnout and protests seeking improved
economic and social systems.
