Is China’s development finance a challenge to the existing
system of development
Most
developing nations have turned to China in recent years for development loans.
In 2017, President Xi said that infrastructure connectivity is the backbone of
development through cooperation at the belt and road forum. African leaders celebrated
his remarks. However, India and the West have been cautious about approving
this 'debt trap' policy. The West is critical of these loans and claims that they
undermine global norms in debt sustainability and environmental and social
safeguards. Therefore, understanding the role of China in development finance
will aid in the understanding of whether these loans challenge global norms.
