Expert Solution

C.elegans worm is used as a model organism in disease research because of several reasons. First, because of its short life cycle from an egg to maturity which takes between 2 and 3 weeks (Yokoyama, 2020). In addition, they have two types of sexes male and hermaphrodites which means they have both male and female parts thus have the ability to self-fertilize in large numbers without needing a mate (Yokoyama, 2020). Also, it can be grown cheaply in a laboratory because it does not use a lot of resource due to their small size. Furthermore, it can stay in a dormant state for a long time through refrigeration at -80 degrees Celsius. Therefore, a researcher can use the worm on a need basis.
