The essay
needs to be four paragraphs long and doesn't need an introduction or concluding
paragraph. Each paragraph needs to be about one of the books and answer these
question:
1. What was one of the major
themes of the work?
2.How did the author convey
those themes using launguage and rhetorical devices?
3.How effective do you think
the work was overall?
4.Do you think high school
students should continue reading this work? Why? Why not?
Master Harold;Racism is a major theme in Master Harold as the
story is embedded with the sophisticated racial relationships between Sam and
Willie, the two middle-aged African American workers, and their boss' son
Master Harold, a White teenager (Fugard). When the play was set in South Africa, the country was
under apartheid. The book effectively uses South African English slang to
immerse readers into the play's setting in 1950s South Africa. The play's tone
is initially light and comedic but quickly changes to being serious as Hally
reveals his racism (Fugard). Symbolism plays
a significant role in representing the play's most vital messages. For
instance, the kite represents the soaring hope for racial equality (Fugard). The work is effective as a multifaceted testament to
apartheid's and racism's cruelty. Therefore, it teaches high school students
the importance of equality and lack of prejudice between races.
