Question

LGBTQ and History The Significance of The Stonewall Riots

Y‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍our project in this course will be due on the second to last week of class. For right now, all I want you to do is tell me what topic you are thinking of researching and what you think the final outcome will be. This is not set in stone. After learning more in this course you might decide to change your topic. However, I would like you to start thinking of the project now and get started on research as soon as possible. Submit your topic and outcome idea via canvas today for credit. You can read more details about the project below. The purpose of this project is to allow you to pursue your passion by exploring a topic of your choice in LGBTQ+ history. I believe learning should be about following your intellectual curiosity wherever it leads you. This means discovering topics that interest you and that are relevant to your life. Begin by choosing any topic that interests you in LGBTQ+ history. Choose a topic that is earlier than the year 2000 to focus on a historical rather than a modern political issue. Research the topic using academic scholarly articles and books (academic articles and books are those written by professors and published by university presses). You may use a few popular sources (online articles and blog posts) as well but preferably if they are written by a professor (research the author) or expert in the field. Create a bibliography of your sources using formal Chicago style citations (Links to an ‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍external site.). I recommend you consult a minimum of eight to ten sources. After reading the sources, consider the significance of the topic in the overarching spectrum of LGBTQ+ history. Ask yourself, why was this important? What happened in LGBTQ+ history before and after it? Does it represent continuity or change? What was the short-term and long-term significance of it? How does it still resonate with us today? Draft a one sentence thesis in response to the above questions. Gather evidence to support your thesis. This should include specific examples that prove your argument about the significance of your topic. Choose an outcome to demonstrate your new knowledge. This may be any project of your choice. Feel free to pitch ideas to me as well. You may be as creative as you wish. For example, you might choose to present your findings as a(n): video/animation blog post infographic virtual museum exhibit (similar to Google Arts & Culture exhibits) art project lesson plan Whatever outcome you choose, be sure state your thesis, use appropriate evidence to support your thesis, place your topic in historic context, and make conclusions about the overall significance of the topic in LGBTQ+ history. I hope that you choose a topic and project outcome that you enjoy researching and creating. The goal of this project is to give you the opportunity to explore your interest more in depth and to have fun while learning‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍.

Expert Solution

The majority of the revolutions that hallmarked history stem from riots. For instance, the George Floyd riots led to global awareness of police brutality against individuals from marginalized communities, which is an issue that has received minimal global attention. The Stonewall Riots can be considered one of the significant occurrences in LGBTQ rights and history. These riots that were prompted by the Stonewall raid are considered the antecedents of contemporary LGBTQ advocacy [1]. The significance of this riot is not drawn from the fact that it was the first protest held to advocate for the rights of individuals in this community. These riots were not the first uprising of their kind, as other uprisings shared similar objectives to it in the past [2]. Therefore, it is crucial to understand why this riot had major significance to LGBTQ and history. As a result, this project will argue that these riots are considered a pivotal instance in the history of the LGBTQ+ community, signifying a notable transition from acquiescence to assertiveness, and its reverberations remain discernible in contemporary times.
