In the
poems about Norman Morrison, the poets describe his act of self-immolation as
protest. Read the poems carefully. Then write a short response (paragraph) in
which you compare two of the poets’ presentations of Noman’s act. In other
words, do the poets present him as noble? Heroic? Mentally unwell? In your
response, analyze the way in which one poetic device that is
shared by both poems illuminates the way in which Norman is presented. You
may choose from many, but some suggestions are word choice, imagery, tone,
metaphor, and repetition. Provide at least one cited example of the poetic
device from each poem. Citation example- (Starbuck, lines 1-2) Attached in the
document are 4 poems for the assignment.
Norman Morrison burned himself
in Pentagon as a way of protesting to convince the United States to stop its
participation in the Vietnam war. However, since his death, many poets
developed different poems illustrating the reasoning behind his actions. Although
the poems use different figurative language, they all address the death of
Norman Morrison. For instance, there are various similarities and differences
between David Ferguson's and Adrian Mitchell's poems, Norman Morrison.
