Please submit a rough draft of the Introduction for your Final Research Paper. Rough drafts are due via Canvas by Wednesday, April 5 at 1:30pm. Your rough draft should incorporate feedback from your Topic Memo. (50 points) Complete a peer review of one of your classmate's papers during class. You will be assigned to a peer writing group based on your paper’s topic. Provide feedback to at least one person in your group about how to improve their paper. What is working in the paper? What is unclear or needs better organization? Your reviews are due by the end of class on Wednesday, April 5. If you are unable to attend class, you must email me and your group to make alternative arrangements. (50 points) The Introduction should provide readers with a clear and concise overview of the paper (300-500 words). This section should include the following: Background: What is the topic of this paper? Why should the reader care about this topic? What is some background information readers should know about this topic? What is the scope of the problem? How many people does this problem affect? For example, if your topic is violence against women in Mexico, you would provide readers with statistics about the types and prevalence of violence against women in Mexico, how these rates have developed over time (i.e. increased, decreased, stayed the same), and how these rates compare to the U.S. and other countries. Thesis Statement: What is the overall argument of your paper? Your argument should explain what causes the phenomenon you are researching. State a clear, concise and specific argument that identifies specific factors which explain the underlying causes of the issue you are examining. For example, if your topic is violence against women in Mexico, your thesis statement might be: “This paper will argue that rates of violence against women in Mexico are high compared to other nations because cultural factors discourage reporting of abuse and there is a lack of adequate law enforcement responses.” Overview of the Paper: Provide readers with a roadmap for the rest of the paper. For example: “First, this paper provides an overview of current empirical literature on violence against women in Mexico. Next, the paper will provide an overview and critique of current policies related to violence against women in Mexico. The conclusion provides a summary of the paper’s main findings and provides suggestions for future policy reforms.” current topic: Juvenile Delinquency
Issue I am Interested;I am interested in studying juvenile delinquency. It fascinates me because it is an important issue that impacts many communities, and due to the desire to understand betters the causes, implications, and potential solutions to this problem. I am particularly interested in how social and economic factors influence juvenile delinquency and the possibility of policy solutions to address the issue.
