Chapters 6 and 8. Do you think Bryan Stevenson makes a compelling case that
there are problems in the U.S. criminal justice system?Bryan
Stevenson makes a compelling case that there are issues in the U.S.A. criminal
justice structure. For instance, Charlie's crime settings offer room for
further in-depth reflection on the aims and moral principles of the criminal
justice system (Stevenson, 2014). Although the criminal justice system's stated
goals are to safeguard the innocent and prosecute wrongdoing, neither of these
goals is met in the cases of George and Charlie (Stevenson, 2014). Charlie is
too little to physically restrain George from mistreating his mother. He
doesn't know how to report domestic violence or is afraid George will get away
with it and react against Charlie for calling attention to him. Charlie, who
felt exposed and worried that he had lost his mother, decided to stand up for
himself and defend himself (Stevenson, 2014). His subsequent incident, in which
he was wrongly prosecuted and then abused in prison, as a result, served as an
example of how flawed and unfair the judicial system is.
