Introduction
In the contemporary world,
humanity has advanced to the point where every triumph from where they
initially began with a form of virtue. However, this aspect can now be seen to
be employed as a means of fostering more incivility. As such, the presence of
civility where individuals assert and providing for one's wants and opinions
without diminishing those of another is in question. It presence currently is
crucial given this is how society describes the care and affection shown to one
another. Therefore, analysing the ‘In These Divided Times, Is Civility Under
Siege?’ is crucial in determining whether politeness should be used to build
trust rather than as a weapon to intimidate others given that it is important
for the long-term survival of individuals.
Unpacking of the quote,
‘Civility under Siege’
The degree of civility in a society is determined by how its members behave toward one another. If someone behaves well toward another person, there will be comprehension, harmony, and cooperation. It has been stated that the chief executive of each nation bears the primary duty for civility (Fadel). If the nation's leaders were impolite and used the internet to make meaningless remarks to people, this would cause the nation's citizens to be impolite, hateful, and violent. The political figures making these absurd tweets also appeal to the people for support while suffering from a lack of civilization. Social media has evolved into a powerful tool for attacking anyone explicitly or implicitly in the modern world. For instance, Donald Trump is well-known for exploiting the internet to broadcast threats against Iran and other nations that have the potential to start a third world war (Fadel). Not just the head of state but also every nation's citizens should be held accountable for upholding civility and defending against any incivility that may arise. Additionally, additional voices are expected to join those expressed in response to violent tweets, postings, videos, and discussions. In addition to this online humiliation, individuals have been dying due to these foolish internet remarks (Fadel). Being respectful, everyone should pause to consider their actions and posts before sharing them with the world. "Civility has been about making sure that the existing quo, the hierarchy of the status quo at present, which implies structural racism, gender injustice, and economic inequality, stays permanent," Leila Fadel declares in the piece (Fadel). The public will be driven back to their initial starting point by such aggressive and vicious behavior, which might result in a crisis, condemnation, and conflict. Thus, civility is in question given societies recent trends with how they handle responses in media.
