Expert Solution

The first theme is that of  guilt. Two characters show it; Adoniram and Sammy. When Sarah asks Adoniram what is getting built in the nearby fields after she sees men digging, he is reluctant to reply (The Revolt of Mother Themes). This is because he remembers the promise he made her 40 years ago about the new house getting built on those very fields. The author says, “The old man glanced doggedly at his wife as he tightened the last buckles on the harness. ‘I want to know what them men are diggin' over there in that field for.’  ‘They're diggin' a cellar, I s'pose, if you've got to know. ‘A cellar for what?’  ‘A barn.’ ‘A barn? You ain't goin' to build a barn over there where we was goin' to have a house, father?’ (Wilkins, 43-44). Despite the guilt Adoniram feels, he refuses to answer his wife's question about the construction of the house and instead walks away from her.
