1.The
history of LGBTQ+ faced significant impacts in the 1980s due to the shift in
the political climate. During this period, the LGBTQ+ community formed several
groups that aimed at fighting and protecting the rights of its members, but
this led to hostility, prejudice and racism among the individuals. Additionally,
this was accelerated by the increase in the HIV/AIDS crisis, which ravaged the
citizens of America, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the
impact of the shifting political climate was influenced by the emergence of the
Moral Majority coalition, which led to the mobilization against issues
regarding gay rights and HOV/AIDS awareness (Lecture Video). Another example of
the impact of the shift in the political climate is the formation of the AIDS
Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), which advocated for the fight against AIDS
(Brier, n.d.). Furthermore, ACT UP demanded more support from the government
through funding for AIDS research, improved access to treatment and mitigating
discrimination against individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
