Democracy
has undergone significant changes over time. This is both theoretically and practically,
from the most original practice of direct democracy to the most recent form of
representative democracy. Decision-making approaches involve aspects like a
consensus, majority rule, and supermajority. The principles of democracy are
reflected in the fact that eligible citizens have equal rights before the law.
Three fundamental principles are related to democracy. These include ascending
control, political control, and the social standards considered acceptable by
the people and the authority. For a good functioning democracy, characteristics
such as equality, political freedom, and the rule of law must be present.
Democracy is not only applied in the political state but also within private
organizations. Another feature of democracy is the ability of the voters to
participate fully and fairly in the matters of their society. Therefore,
democracy can be termed a form of political collectivism since the eligible citizens
have equal rights and say in the government's lawmaking.
