Re: Roe v. Wade and its Impact
on Business in the Coming Year
According to the New York
Times, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the rights to abortion
that the constitution has protected for nearly five decades. As a result, there
will be bans on the procedure in almost half the states. Part of those in the
majority 6-to-3 ruling were former appointees of President Trump (Tumin, 2022).
Thirteen states, including Louisiana, Alabama, and Kentucky, will use their
trigger laws to ban the procedure in the coming days or immediately. Eleven
more states are likely to ban the procedure, with some shutting down their
abortion clinics immediately (Tumin, 2022). Nonetheless, Biden promised to
defend women who opt to travel to a different state where abortion is allowed.
However, through their decision, the Supreme Court has permitted politicians to
regulate what women do with their bodies, showing that they mistrust them to
determine their life's course.
Businesses should prepare for
the aftermath of the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as it will have social
and political implications that impact them in the coming year. When there are
competing demands from various stakeholders, such as consumers, activists,
elected officials, and shareholders, businesses are often in the middle of it
(Livni et al., 2022). Businesses seek to know what the decision means for their
employees' health coverage. Local officials in states restricting abortion
threaten to punish businesses that help employees gain access to abortion in
different states (Livni et al., 2022). Activists supporting abortion rights are
urging businesses to stop donating to the campaigns of those supporting
abortions. Additionally, numerous businesses are moving to lower-tax states,
many of which are posed to start total bans on abortion. For instance, Citadel
stated its plan to move to Miami from Chicago (Livni et al., 2022). Corporate
America has often seen these changes as businesses seek lower taxes and a more
affordable workforce, a state that is now complicated after the overturning of
Roe v. Wade. Overall, the abortion ban has brought politics into the workplace,
a situation employers loathe.
To address the tension in this
regard, particularly at ABC consulting, I would love permission to delve
further into the issue. It would be crucial to determine how the decision
affects ABC Consulting and identify the employees' views on the matter. This
way, one can e more informed on how to handle the change and its effects on
employee productivity. After the research, I would love to present to all the
employees at a meeting to discuss my findings.
