to listen
to a scholar lecturing on the topic of Colonial Art in Latin America. The goal
is to understand how European artistic ideas (form our time period we are
covering just now in class) were present here, but also how the specific
context of Latin American art shaped such art.
1. It is good to have some
overview at first and thus listen to the brief lecture at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMaaQieHlN In
your response focus esp. on the Colonial Art period and discuss everything that
you are learning about it. Scholars argue even over the
terms for this period in cultural history. Which title/terminology would you
choose and why?
2. https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/art-americas/new-spain/viceroyalty-new-spain/a/defensive-saints-and-angels-in-the-spanish-americas Give
the idea of this article and your thoughts on it? Give some examples (ID always
the specific work of art you are going to discuss) Again, whatever strikes you
as interesting or controversial or worth thinking through out loud in these
pages, discuss this in your final paragraph.
Orientalism
is a form of western art that emerged in the 18th century during
Bonaparte's campaign against the ottoman empire. This period was characterized
by the church's influence on several nations, and the Ottoman Empire posed a
threat to this influence because of its Muslim heritage. In addition, art
during this period was influenced by the stories in the bible, for example, the
painting showing St. Michael triumphing over the dragon by Jerome Weirex, which
emphasized the message of divine protection that had characterized this era
(Ewbank). Colonialization in the 19th century changed oriental art
into colonial art, which expanded art to include paintings of indigenous
communities, furniture and portraits.
