Jacob Lawrence is a well-known and profound artist
and one of American art's most appreciated artists. He was birthed in Atlantic
City, New Jersey, on 1917 September 7. He was birthed to his guardians,
migrants who moved from the rural South to urban, industrialized Midwestern and
Northeastern cities during the Great Migration from 1915 to the 1950s. At age three,
Lawrence grew up in Harlem with Northeast native and Southern roots. During
this period, Harlem provided him with advantages as it encompassed the cultural
and intellectual outpouring of the Harlem Renaissance (1920s – 1930s). With
this, Jacob enrolled in his initial art classes. By 23 years, Jacob had
completed a series of narrative series on important people such as Toussaint
L'Ouverture, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. Additionally, he trained
in major institutions such as Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Harlem
City and then pursued his studies at the American Artists School in New York.
His early exposure to art in Harlem played a significant role in shaping his
artistic identity. He later died in June 2000, 9.
