Explain Princess Elisabeth's
objection in your own words. Do you think that the dualist can surmount this
challenge? Defend your view.Princess Elisabeth's objection is based on her
understanding of motion. She argues that based on the principles of motion
argued by Descartes, the mind is incapable of moving the body in its current
state, which is parallel to that of the body (McWeeny 298). Additionally, her
objection is based on the relationship between the body and the soul and their
link through their ability to act in unison and undergo pain (McWeeny 299). The
dualist cannot overcome this argument as, according to McWeeny (299), the arguments
he offers to counter Princess Elisabeth's claim regarding the soul being
responsible for the body's movement has been rejected by many critics of his
arguments, including the Princess. The latter was able to convince him with her
arguments. Therefore, Princess Elisabeth's objection to dualism is based on the
notion that it contradicts the general principles of motion and that the soul
is responsible for body movement.
