The documentary centres
on America's exploration of the West as it looked for more space to expand its
population of five and a half million people. Through this exploration,
America’s size increased through the Louisiana Purchase (“The Louisiana Purchase”). The
Louisiana Purchase resulted from many contingent events, allowing America to
acquire this new territory at 4 cents an acre. Louisiana was previously deemed
worthless, as depicted by it being a pawn in European diplomacy, especially
when faced with war. The threat of this territory being grabbed by Napoleon,
Americans, and other nations was always imminent, necessitating actions such as
securing the New Orleans port and war (“The
Louisiana Purchase”). All these events later culminated in
France offering America the Louisiana territory as it needed money to fight
with England.
