The Reagan election
to the presidency in the 1980s marked a shift in the politics of the US. The
Reagan government advocated for the rise of conservatism. As much as the shift
had its drawbacks, the Reagan government achieved some of conservatism's goals.
Therefore it is essential to understand the Reagan Revolution, the goals it
achieved, and the impact it had in the USA.The Reagan government came into
power when the inflation rate was high with high taxes and government spending.
The primary goal of the Reagan government was to reduce the tax rates and cut
government programs. The deduction in taxes was to motivate the top rich to
invest in businesses and investments since the returns were high (Corbett et
al.). The deduction in taxes would further motivate the creation of more
businesses and increase job opportunities hence growing and leading to economic
growth. The Reagan government successfully cut taxes for three years through
the passing of the economic recovery act; however, Reagan did not successfully
reduce government spending. Reagan also advocated against communism since it
threatened freedom (Reagan). Reagan's administration increased the budget
allocated for defense (Green). The government argued that it needed to increase
its defense budget to balance its military abilities. An increased defense
budget would also ensure that the countries' interests are protected in the
face of their adversaries. Hence conservatism advocated a more robust defense
system.
