The
first recognized film by an American was made by Robert Flaherty in 1992. The nanook of the north told the story of
Inuit Eskimos. Although, the film cannot be fully recognized as a documentary,
it provided the blueprint for other filmmakers to come up with motion pictures
that made the subject of the film more visible and heard by the audience. Thus,
Flaherty’s film revolutionized the manner in which documentaries were made;
from actuality films to motion pictures with sound in them. Therefore, a
critical analysis on these changes will provide insight on the leaps that have
occurred in the art of storytelling.
