This week’s Discussion post we are going to focus on one of America’s most well-known filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino. In this week’s discussion I want to explore the feeling of suspense and surprise.
Quentin Tarantino is known for a lot of things, and one he deservingly gets credit for is his ability to create suspense. He can do this with exceptional dialogue and great characters.
What I want you
to do is watch a scene from Pulp Fiction (1994) and Inglorious Basterds
(2009). Both of these scenes are essentially the opening of their films.
Both of these scenes are introductions to central characters in the films. In Pulp Fiction we are introduced to Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, two hitmen on a mission for their boss Marsellus Wallace. In Inglorious Basterds we are introduced to Col. Hans Landa, an official in Hitler’s SS Nazi army.
How would you describe Tarantino’s use of dialogue in each scene? https://youtu.be/6Pkq_eBHXJ4https://youtu.be/Mnb_3ibUp38
In Pulp Fiction, how does he build suspense? How does he use surprise in the scene?
In Inglorious
Basterds, how does the suspense build?
What is the turning point of the scene? What do these scenes have in common, and what makes them different?
As a final though, which scene did you find more engaging? Which scene did you find more suspenseful? Please explain and why.
Tarantino
uses different experiences that denote tension components, including lack of control,
instability, and uncertainty, to elevate degrees of tension as much as
possible. Tarantino also uses a suite of strategies, such as the long-stretched
dialogues that go on and off on extended tangents. “Part of my plan,” for
instance, buries it in so much minutia about something that a person cannot
realize that it is communicating the significant plot point until that part
becomes substantial enough for one to remember in due course (Movie clips,
2011). The charged drink, food, and the capacity for the carnage at any
particular time. Realizing that one is watching a Tarantino flick adds to the
suspense.
