Background Information
In the case study you
will apply the material in the course to a specific individual. The person you
will study is a well-known FASD advocate and public speaker named Myles
Himmelreich. The case study is intended to help you apply the information you
are learning, so you should be looking for connections between the material you
read in the modules and the testimony that Myles presents in the videos.
Directions
Watch the following
videos (and any other videos you find useful in completing this assignment):
Living with
FASD: Myles Himmelreich (1 hour, 12 minutes)
The
Body-Behaviour Connection: A first hand perspective about FASD (40
minutes)
Answer the questions
for each section in the case study guide based on material from the course and
information you learn in the videos.
Compile all sections of
the case study into a word document. Use APA to format your paper and cite your
references. Use the Section heading as headings in your paper.
Submit the completed
document to the dropbox: Assignment 1 Comprehensive Case Study.
Guidelines
Please show respect by
using person-first language and proper terms according the FASD language guide.
The material in this
assignment is drawn from your own experience, course materials, and other
research you might need to do to provide thorough coverage of a topic. All
references must be cited and appropriately documented on a reference page at
the end of the document. For more information on how to properly cite and
reference, please go to Bow Valley College APA style, 7th Edition.
Although the assignment
is not due until week 9, you will need to complete sections of the case study
as you work through the materials.
Assignment 1 check ins:
In week 4 and week 7, you will be asked to submit your assignment progress so
your instructor can monitor your progress and provide feedback on your work. In
Week 4, please submit the Case Synopsis draft. In Week 7, please submit your
revised Case Synopsis AND your draft of Traits of FASD. Then for the
final due date, you will submit all 3 parts. This will ensure you are
progressing through the assignment as required to complete it on time.
Assignment 1 Sections
1. Case Synopsis (1/2 – 1 page)
Provide a brief description of Myles. Examples of information you may want to include are age, gender, short history, family situation, relationships, and day-to-day activities. You may include any information you deem relevant and interesting.
2. Traits of FASD (1 –
2 pages)
List and describe the
primary impairments commonly associated with FASD that Myles seems to have
experienced. Identify those impairments that do not seem to impact Myles.
Explain why you think Myles might not display all the symptoms of FASD.
In your opinion, what
are Myles’ strengths? Which of these strengths appear to be the result of the
impairments of FASD and related experiences? Which ones appear to be in spite
of FASD?
Identify some of the
adverse outcomes that Myles has experienced. Choose one of these and trace how
it may have arisen from primary impairments that were not accommodated.
Hypothesize about which supports you think may have prevented the development
of this outcome and explain why. What could have been done to more effectively
support and assist him? What are some of the potential barriers that might
limit the supports/assistance you suggest?
3. Diagnosis (1 page)
Do you think a
diagnosis of FAE (remember this was many years ago that Myles was diagnosed)
helped or hindered him? Or both? Discuss your reasoning and give examples of
why you feel this way. Given the current diagnostic criteria, if Myles was
diagnosed now, what would be different?
Directions for Early
Feedback
If you choose to submit
for early feedback, please follow these guidelines:
Write the section
number and the instructions for that section in bold at the top of the page.
Always include all components
of the case study which you have completed along with the most recent part
submitted for feedback. In other words, the submission should be cumulative.
For check in 1, you will submit section 1, but for check in 2, you will submit
both section 1 and 2, and for the final submission you will submit your
completed, properly formatted document.
At each check in, you
will be provided with feedback on your assignment. However, the case study will
not be graded until after the final submission.
Sections of the case
study have different amounts of work depending on the topics covered. Plan
accordingly. There is an estimate of how many (double-spaced, type-written)
pages each section should cover beside the instructions for that section. You
should use this as a rough guide only, as you are not marked on the amount your
write, but rather the quality of it.
Directions for final
submission
Ensure your case study
is submitted as one document, with the section headings used as headings in
your paper. Use proper APA format, including title page, and citing and
referencing.
Read the directions for
the case study again to make sure you completed it correctly. Ensure you made
corrections based on your check in feedback.
Submit your completed
case study to the DropBox on D2L for marking.
Individuals exposed to
alcohol in the womb and born with one or more health conditions are at the canopy
of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs), and the impact of these disorders
can be felt throughout a person's lifetime from childhood until they reach
maturity. Learning and personality disorders are among the possible conditions
in addition to psychological and physiological ones, and youth experiencing
affliction tend to face academic struggles and exhibit potentially harmful
behavior. Additionally, affected persons have an increased likelihood of
indulging in the misuse of both alcoholic drinks as well as other substances.
In light of this, various organizations have recommended strategies to lower
the number of infants born with FASD now that it has become prominent.
Nevertheless, observing the case of Myles Himmelreich instances the traits,
reasons, and prevalence associated with the conditions to showcase how FASD
affects individuals and the community.
