Health Promotion - Medical Approach

Healthy eating is the health issue selected to focus on in this assignment

Take a photo and write about one of the health promotion approaches: socio-environmental, behavioral, and medical. Please write only about the medical approach.The photo needs to reflect or represent one of the health promotion approaches (i.e., medical) that could be used to address the health issue of healthy eating. Refer to the Continuum of Health Promotion Practice in your text. The photo will be accompanied by a written section that explains how the photo reflects the medical health promotion approach. Medical, Behavioural, and Socio-environmental approaches The following points need to be addressed for the medical approach

Overview of approach (what are the characteristics of this approach, why is it important)

Draw on health promotion theory to explain how the photo depicts each approach and justify/rationalize your photo selection

Explain the strengths (benefits) and weaknesses (challenges) of using each approach in relation to your chosen issue – healthy eating

Include academic references relating to health promotion theory and practice to support your overview.

Summarize how the medical approach to health promotion can be used to address the health issue of healthy eating

The purpose of the website is to raise awareness – primarily with the use of photographs – about how important public health/health promotion efforts are for individuals, families, communities, and populations. For some inspiration, take a few minutes to look at these two sites, especially the images and photos that are used to depict public health. Tip: Health promotion initiatives often address health issues using more than one approach (e.g. behavioural and socio-environmental approaches). This might be reflected in some of your photos. However, you should only write about the one approach that you intended to reflect in that particular photo. For example, if I photographed exercise infrastructure supplied by the local council in my local park, I would choose to discuss this as a socio-environmental approach given it represents an initiative developed by the local council that aims to create healthier environments within the community. Alternatively, 

I might have photographed a sack of potatoes placed on a couch. In this case, I would choose to write about how the photo reflects the need for behavioural approaches in health promotion, especially given programs like ‘Find 30’ (a social marketing campaign) are constantly reminding all of us to get up off the couch and to achieve the recommended physical activity targets.
