Discuss the
three pillars of Donabedian’s model ( Structure, process, outcomes ) for
healthcare quality assurance. Does this model have practical
applications today, given the current focus on healthcare value?
Healthcare is one of the most crucial systems since it involves the treatment
of people. Therefore, hospital management needs to apply methods and models
that will improve the quality of care. The Donabedian structure is a model that
is used to assess the quality of care in a facility. The Donabedian model comprises
three major pillars. The first pillar is structure. Structures can be explained
as the input by the service provided
("A model for measuring quality care", n.d.). The structure
comprises the healthcare’s attributes like the number of staff to the patients and
the operating hours of the healthcare facility. The second pillar is processed.
The process can be explained as the running of systems. An example of a process
is the standards employed by the healthcare workers in the treatment of
patients. The patient waiting time is also part of the process. The last pillar
of the Donabedian is the outcome.
