Learn post 2
Submission Friday 20th May (S1 Week 11), by 5pm; maximum of 250 words split between both steps outlined below (for assessment purposes). The purpose of this post is for students to critically engage with a specific theoretical concept found in the modules on Reciprocity (What's in it for everybody?), PACE Ethical Practice - Parts I and II (Expect the unexpected?; Grapping for the 'grey areas'), Social Inclusion (See yourself in a broader context), Reflection Parts I and II (Are you experienced?; Contemplating your options), Communicating Science (Tell us what you really know), or Career Skills (Impostor syndrome?; Now what?), in relation to something they have experienced during their PACE activity. It also enables students to share something about their PACE activity as a means of reflecting on that experience together, as well as individually. If students have not yet started their PACE activity or not had much time in the activity, this post can be adapted to focus more on the process of finding a PACE activity. This component must be carried out through the "iLearn Post 2" Forum of the unit's iLearn site, once students have completed the associated modules. To complete all components of this post, the following steps must be followed:
Step 1: Pick one theoretical concept found in the Reciprocity, PACE Ethical Practice (Parts I and II), Social Inclusion, Reflection (Parts I and II), Communicating Science, or Career Skills Modules. By cross-referencing1something you have encountered as part of your PACE activity as a means of illustration, discuss one of the following:what you think is challenging about that concept and why OR what you find inspiring about that concept and why OR whether you agree or disagree with that concept (or its implications) and why.Try using the And, But, Therefore (ABT) technique of communication (refer to Workshop 6 "Tell us what you really know") for this post to help you create a compelling post.
Step 2: Respond to one classmate's iLearn post in this particular forum. Your response must be more than simply agreeing with what another student has said. Your response needs to address the way/s in which their discussion has influenced your perspective of the concept they have posted about. You are welcome to respond to more than one classmate, but for assessment purposes, the first chronological response will be counted.
The participation and
community engagement (PACE) practice involves learning the various aspects of
the community through active participation and interaction. Although Australia
is ranked among the most inclusive countries, it experiences challenges
enhancing PACE programs (Social
Determinants and indigenous health.2020). For example, the most challenging
aspect of the PACE ethical practice concept is the ability to embrace
diversity. Another challenge could be a lack of adequate knowledge of the
different ethical complexities and intervention measures (Oosterveld-Vlug et al., 2019). In
addition, the community is comprised of people from different ethnic groups,
cultures, religions, and traditional beliefs, which could make interaction a
challenge and lead to social discrimination (Semple et al., 2017). For instance, there could be a
language barrier and different ethical beliefs and norms hindering successful
interactions. Therefore, to enhance the inclusivity of the indigenous population,
effective PACE practices should be enhanced.
