This is an
exam - question is: Explain why tensions arose over slavery and why they grew
more intense with America's expansion. As tensions raised proponents of both
sides of the slavery issue attempted to justify their positions, what
justifications did both sides give? The enslaved lived harsh lives, describe
why their lives were so harsh and discuss some of the slave codes (laws)
that ruled over them and why they were created? The enslaved were not passive
members in the narrative of slavery in what ways, both active and passive forms
of resistance, did the enslaved employ to gain more agency over their lives? In
your opinion why did it take a war for America to resolve the issue over
slavery, instead of working through legislation like in Britain?
Why did tensions arise
over slavery and why did they grew more intense with America's? The American
Civil War concluded the fight between proponents and opponents of slavery that
had started with the creation of the United States. The issue of expanding
slavery to the surrounding states had reached a boiling point, and several
political compromises had been made to settle this interstate conflict
between the North and the slave-owning Southern territories (Hall,
2019). Several acts of resistance marked everyday life in a slave workshop.
Black Americans in enslavement used a variety of strategies to oppose the
authority of their owners and seek their freedom to live as they liked, even if
the law barred them from becoming free. Because slaveholders depended on slave
labor to keep their businesses viable, enslaved persons regularly used work
delays and absences to negotiate some of their work limitations. For instance,
working on farms required standing from dawn till dusk and consuming food that
wasn't necessarily suited for an animal (Hall, 2019). Enslaved people on
plantations lived in modest houses with a floor and little furniture. The
darkest aspects of life were routinely witnessed on large estates with violent
overseers (Hall, 2019). Therefore, enslaved people in harsh conditions and
tensions during that era intensified slavery.
