Reviving Mexican Americans' Mestizo Heritage

A‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍PSA Style. OLS/MAS 4319 Politics of Mexican Americans Fall 2023 -Think Piece #1: [Re]connection to Mestizo Heritage- Due Date: Thursday, September 14. Our class is designed around the critical analysis of topics in Mexican American politics. As a means of engaging course readings and lectures, and contemporary issues in Mexican American politics, you will complete three short think pieces1 of 3 full double-spaced pages in length. Among the many topics we have discussed in class in the first weeks include:

 • cultural nationalism,

• citizenship,

 • mestizaje,

• the Spanish language,

• collective Chicano consciousness,

 • crisis,

 • accommodation, assimilation, withdrawal; and

 • resistance In your first think piece you will demonstrate your understanding of these and all other relevant concepts we have read and discussed by responding to the question:

Your think piece is to be written in an essay narrative format. Keep in mind that the idea behind a think piece is to incorporate your analysis of concepts by drawing on evidence (literature properly cited using APSA style) and on your own observations and experiences. A think piece of high quality develops from a solid understanding of course readings and in-class discussions. A think piece of low quality is one that simply summarizes the readings and fails to incorporate the frameworks and ideas covered in class into a thoughtful discussion. The assignment is due via upload to Canvas on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 11:00. 1 Merriam-Webster defines a think piece as “a piece of writing meant to be thought-provoking and speculative that consists chiefly of background material and pers‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍onal opinion and analysis.”
