issues in Mexican American politics, you will complete three short think
pieces1 of 3 full double-spaced pages in length. Among the many topics we have
discussed in class in the first weeks include:
• cultural nationalism,
• citizenship,
• mestizaje,
• the Spanish
language,
• collective
Chicano consciousness,
• crisis,
• accommodation, assimilation, withdrawal; and
• resistance In your first think piece you
will demonstrate your understanding of these and all other relevant concepts we
have read and discussed by responding to the question:
A multifaceted mosaic of
cultural diversity, historical nuance, and the profound idea of mestizaje make
up the Mexican-American identity. Reconnecting with the mestizo history, which
influences collective awareness, citizenship, and cultural nationalism, is a
crucial initiative in Mexican-American politics. A key player in this project
was Rudolfo Anaya, a recognized name in Mexican-American literature. Therefore,
evaluating the degree to which Anaya's generation
successfully renewed Mexican Americans' reconnection to their mestizo ancestry
will provide insights into the complexity of this community.
