Imagine you are editing an anthology on Art &
Technology. As the editor, you are tasked with writing an introduction for each
of the readings provided in the course. Imagine the text is to be used by
students interested in the effects and influences of emerging technologies on
the way we make, understand, and theorize
"art". These introductions should address the central
questions and propositions set forth within the text, but should move beyond
summary into analysis. Utilize your introductions
Understanding
Media: The Extensions of Man by Marshall McLuhan seeks to devise ways of
associating aural, visual, and functional design in which sciences and arts,
including the structure of the media, reshape the model and public life.
"The medium is the message" phrase drives a sense of how medium
implants or embeds itself in a specific message, ultimately devising a
symbiotic relationship by which medium dictates or influences how people
perceive the message (McLuhan, 1994). The author demonstrates that the features
of the medium trigger the consequences for a person and society. Marshall
implies that the content or the message, for instance, the violence present in
video games, originates from the medium. "The medium is the message"
implies that the content is not essential; instead, the medium's
characteristics dictate the actual content or message. The publication
emphasizes the popular assertion that "the medium is the message" to
imply that the structure of the delivery system conveying any particular
content is more significant than the message itself.
