Many potential stressors we face involve events or situations that require us to make changes in our ongoing lives and require time as we adjust to those changes. Reflect on and share a stressor that you have experienced.
What
stress management strategies or coping styles were involved to better manage
this stress?
Once in a while, each person
gets stressed as they balance work, personal life, and school. Students' stress
could result from family issues, financial issues, low grades, and work and
school balance. If not well handled, stress could worsen and lead to other
mental issues such as depression and anxiety. For instance, I once experienced
financial strain, which drained me, leading to depression and low grades.
However, some of the strategies I used to manage the stress were practicing
healthy living habits such as a proper diet, exercising, creating a budget,
talking to family and friends, and seeking professional advice.
Poor stress management could
affect one's overall well-being. For instance, I battled with financial stress
in school, which affected my performance, interpersonal skills, and mental
health. Having financial strain at school causes stress as it limits one's
ability to pay debts, and afford essential needs, leading to anxiety,
depression, low grades, and low self-esteem (Kassymova et al., 2018). Suppose
not well-managed stress could lead to chronic mental health conditions. In my
case, I used strategies such as exercising regularly to relieve tension, unwind
my mind, improve sleep and enhance my self-esteem (Kassymova et al., 2018). I
also created a budget where I scraped off unnecessary spending and established
a realistic budget that did not strain my finances. In addition, talking to
family and friends and seeking professional advice played a crucial role in
managing the situation. Friends and family helped offer physical and emotional
support and rebuild my self-esteem, while seeking professional advice helped me
get more insights on how to increase my income sources and balance between
education, work, and personal life (Kassymova et al., 2018). Thus, stress is
unavoidable in life as, at one point, one has to face a situation that could
drain off their energy leading to frustration, stress, or even depression;
hence the proper stress management skills help enhance one's overall
well-being.
Sometimes it could be
difficult to avoid stress. For instance, I once experienced financial strain,
which affected my mental health, interactions, and performance. However, some
of the strategies I used to manage the stress were practicing healthy living
habits such as a proper diet, exercising, creating a budget, talking to family
and friends, and seeking professional advice.
