Bookchin
begins his article that opposes social ecology to deep ecology by examining
environmentalism. He claims that, unlike earlier environmental movements, the
current one isn't solely concerned with ecology. The realization that there is
a correlative relationship between how human beings treat each other and how
they treat nature has birthed the current environmentalism movement. He
highlights a need to evaluate and define the old environmentalists' views to
integrate this new and holistic approach to environmentalism. Finally, he feels
it is necessary to examine how various aspects, such as a consistent ecological
philosophy, ethics, and movement, are joined to form a more meaningful
totality; ecology.
