The
goal of this assignment is to assist you in reflecting upon how firsthand
experiences with loss and grief have contributed to your attitudes, values,
assumptions, beliefs, and personal coping styles and how these may impact on
your skills and abilities to work with clients who are
experiencing these issues. To be the best clinicians we must have the courage
to do what we are asking our clients to do…gain the self-awareness to help move
us forward as we face the challenges of losses in our lives.
Loss
and grief are the intrinsic aspects of life, they lead to shaping our
approaches, values assumptions beliefs and even lines of defense. The Hand of
Loss becomes a self-reference point in this assignment; it symbolizes the
personal reflection on such firsthand interactions with loss and grief using an
original drawing as proof. Through the analysis of losses that are significant
to a person, responses towards them at the time those words were written and
researched from a year later; personal strengths implicated in coping with
loses as well as patterns motivation can be seen clearly observed through loss
experiences during which its individual impact on life choice decisions is
discussed we set off for self-discovery. Moreover, the role of upbringing, culture
religion and ethnicity in dealing with losses will be investigated as well
giving some guidelines on how issues associated to losses can be influenced by
a person’s personal background.
