Roger Williams is a well-known religious and political leader who is
widely recognized for his efforts in development of Rhode
Island. He is also know
advocating for the separation of religion and government in Colonial
America. Roger Williams developed the first
Baptist congregation in the USHe
was born around the year 1603 in London, England, in the United Kingdom. Before
completing his schooling at Pembroke College in Cambridge, where he was lauded
for his linguistic prowess, he was a student of the well-known lawyer Sir
Edward Coke. During his time there, he was a member of the House of Lords (History.com Editors, 2019). This skill helped
him learn American Indian languages easily. While he did get his
ordainment from the Church of England, his decision to become a Puritan during
his time at Cambridge left him feeling disappointed with the church and its
influence in England. In December of 1630, Philip and his wife Mary Bernard
departed England for the colonies. While the couple did start their lives
together in Boston, he eventually found work in both Salem and the more radical
Plymouth Colony due to his controversial ideas.
