Assessment Task 3: Essay
For this essay you will consider applications of the creative arts for people with dementia. You need to choose to focus on applications of either music, visual arts, theatre, drama or dance (or a specific combination). The first section of your essay will examine how some aspects of your chosen field of the arts are currently being employed as successful interventions in dementia care settings and you will synthesise research to analyse how these might work.In the second part of your essay you will draw on the literature and ideas that you have discussed in the first section and propose your own intervention for persons living with dementia in this same field of the creative arts. You will then explain your concept, identifying any risks and outlining the probable outcomes and why you expect it to be effective based on relevant published research.Your essay must contain references formatted in American Psychological Association (APA) style (7th edition) with reference list.

Your essay will examine how some aspects of your
chosen field of the arts are currently being employed as successful
interventions in dementia care settings, proposing a concept for your own
intervention, identifying potential risks and benefits by drawing on
published research.
What's an intervention?.
Interventions used in the care treatment and
support of people with dementia can be both pharmacological (drugs) and
non-pharmacological. The latter include both environmental and behavioural
modification.

Carer interventions come in many different forms,
and ongoing research is investigating which programs and components are most
beneficial. Evidence supports the use of interventions that go beyond education
to include various forms of psychosocial support, including counselling,
training in techniques for behavioural management and participation in support
groups. Studies show that such programs can reduce depression, anger, tension,
fatigue and confusion in carers.

Dementia
involves the loss of cognitive functions such as remembering, thinking, and
reasoning to considerable extents, such that it affects an individual’s daily
activities and life. Dementia also causes people to lose control of their
emotions and alters their personalities. The disease progresses from the
mildest stage, when it begins to interfere with a person's functionality, to
the most critical level, when the patient is entirely reliant on others for
fundamental life functions. The disease becomes more common as people grow
older; however, it is not a part of aging. Some people get to the age of 90
without acquiring the disease. A person’s symptoms also differ depending on the
type of Dementia they have, including Alzheimer’s disease. The condition is
managed through the use of drugs and non-pharmacological treatments.
Non-pharmacological treatments may involve using creative arts such as music,
visual arts, dance, drama, theatre, or a combination. These methods are
valuable mainly due to the absence of effective pharmacological treatments;
hence they shed light on the potential of psychosocial interventions to
eradicate the effects of Dementia and improve the patient’s quality of life.
These creative art activities have certain features that enable them to be
effective in this application. Therefore, this essay will focus on applying the
visual arts to alleviating the effects of Dementia, and the second section will
propose an intervention based on literature to help improve their quality of
life.
