Question

History of the World

7‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍60 words that explain which rules of world history you thought were the most important. And, if you have questions on any of them, feel free to ask about them. Use some examples from the course materials we have covered thus far to help you explain the ones you thought were the most important.

The primary ‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍source to use is the text book "The Origins of the Modern World" by Robert B. Marks fourth edition. Cite this source heavily but only from chapters 1-4. Please use a couple of online sources too. All sources need to be sited. Please see attached how to cite document. This is critical to the grade‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍.

How to Cite

Anything you write for this class, including the discussions and papers, should have citations.

To keep things generally pretty simple, please cite your sources parenthetically. Remember that all sources should be from our course materials, but if you use something that is not, you must cite it as well.

You should cite anything you use, whether you quote it or not. In other words, if you look it up, cite it. This includes when you paraphrase (put something in your own words).

In case you are not familiar with them, a parenthetical citation comes at the end of a sentence but before the punctuation at the end of the sentence and is in parentheses. It usually includes the author’s name, the title of the source, and a page number if there is one. Here is an example: Dr. Cohen said that he wants to keep the citations for HIST 101B “pretty simple” (Cohen, “How to Cite”).

Here is how you should cite the materials in this class:

·        PowerPoint Lectures: (Cohen, Title of the PowerPoint, slide number)

·        Textbook: (Marks, The Origins of the Modern World, page number)

·        An article: (Author Name, “Title,” page number)

·        Online source: (Author Name, Title, website)

·        A Handout with only One Source: (Author Name, Title of Handout, page number if one is provided)

·        A Handout with Multiple Sources: (Author Name for the Source, “Title of the Source,” Title of the Handout, page number if one is provided)

The last type of source is the most complicated type you will have to cite. For example, early in the semester you will read several primary sources from a handout called “Primary Sources on Exploration.” If you wanted to cite the first source, Poem by Ma Huan, which is on page 1 of the handout, you should just write (Ma Huan, “Poem,” Primary Sources on Exploration, 1).

Then, if you want to cite something from page 2 of that handout from the Vasco Da Gama source you would write (Vasco da Gama, “On rounding the Cape of Good Hope and reaching India,” Primary Sources on Exploration, 2).

This lets me see which source you are using and where you found it. And, if you are using this in a discussion, your citation will allow your classmates to find the information you’ve used as well!

Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
