Texas was
the seventh state to secede and the last to secede before the firing at Fort
Sumter signaled the start of the Civil War. South Carolina led the charge in
December of 1860, right after the election of Abraham Lincoln. The people of
Texas had differing views on whether Texas should secede or not, particularly
in light of the many recent transformations Texas had gone through beginning
with Independence from Mexico, becoming its own Republic, and then being
Annexed by the United States. Though Texas would secede, there were many
opponents to this move, including Sam Houston. For this
Enrichment Activity, I want you to make an argument either for or against Texas
secession based on the module readings–taking into account what you believe is
in the best interest of the state at the time of secession. Make sure you
use evidence from the readings to support your argument (quote and cite to at
lease two different sources from the class readings). Sources to be used https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/secession https://texasproud.com/texas-secession-convention-of-1861/ https://civilwarcauses.org/houston.htm
Most states seceded from the
united states based on the issues of slavery and state rights. President
Abraham aimed to stop slavery and alter some Americans' rights, leading to the
Texas secession crisis. However, there were differing arguments on secession
among the Texans; although Texas state faced the threat of scraping the slavery
institutions and altering various rights by president Abraham, the decision to
secession was inappropriate.
Although Texas highly depended
on slavery in production, there were various benefits that the state accrued
from being a member of the union. The Texas secessionist considered the state
of the state's economy and public pressure but as for Houston feared for the
country's democracy after joining the confederacy (Lyman, 2022). Slavery and cotton plantations
played a crucial role in enhancing economic growth . However, in other parts of
the state, the economy was thriving through the wheat, corn, and livestock
trade and not slavery/ cotton; hence, the state could have sought other
solutions to enhance economic growth rather than secession (Buenger, n.d). This
is because the union members gained benefits such as job security, equality,
affordable healthcare, safety, and a high rate of industrialization. In
addition, secession would lead to anarchism and erosion of democracy as the
Texas economy was being controlled by the enslavers who wanted to retain
superiority at the disadvantage of the black Texans (Buenger, n.d). This
decision to secession was inappropriate as it could deprive the state of
democracy, lead to anarchism and deprive the people of benefits accrued from
the United States union, such as rapid industrialization, job security,
affordable healthcare, and safety.
Although Texas state faced the
threat of scraping the slavery institutions and altering various rights by
president Abraham, the decision to secession was inappropriate. Secession from
the union could lead to a lack of democracy due to the growth of the slavery
institutions and depriving the state of benefits from the union.
