Briefly
and objectively-no personal comment/opinion/critiquing-
‘The
Tell-Tale Heart’ by Edgar Allan Poe is a frightening short narrative that
centers on anonymous narrator who is obsessively bothered by the vulture-like
eye of an old man he shares a home with. The lasting obsession influence the
unnamed narrator to committing a gruesome murder and hiding the body under the
floorboards with the intention of forgetting the old man.As the narrative
drastically unfolds, persistent guilt in the form of a continuous,
hallucinatory heartbeat that only him could hear manifests in the narrator’s
mind. Eventually, his obsession with the vulture-like eye and the guilt from
his monstruous act keeps disturbing his mind, influencing him to suffer from
madness, which is a mental disorder. The real evil in this narrative is the
story-teller’s individual twisted psyche, as his illogical obsession and subsequent
violence disclose the depths of human wickedness and the path to madness.
