Question

Short story essay

Y‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍ou will choose one short story from Literature Short Stories. The stories are located in your textbook. This is a 2-3 page, minimum 5-7 paragraphs, essay that is written in MLA format. Note: the 2-3 pages are referring to the body of the paper, and the Works Cited page is a separate page. Should you need a refresher on MLA formatting, I have posted some info on Canvas, and the Polk State library and TLCC have excellent handouts. You are to provide a biography on the author, and then critique the short story. When critiquing you are to include the setting, main characters relevant to the story, plot, symbolism, irony, and historical context. A summary of the story is NOT to be included. Excellent sources can be found.. Some references I recommend are Ebsco Literary Reference Center, Megilla Lit., Literature Reference Center (Gale), www.gale.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., Short Story Criticism, Short Stories for Students, and MasterPlots.‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍At least three references from the above mentioned sources located in the Polk State databases are required and must be cited on the Works Cited page. Your textbook is NOT a reference source and should not be listed on the Works Cited page. Points will be deducted. Wikipedia is NOT allowed as a reference and if used will result in a failing grade either on the assignment or in the class. Be sure to submit the completed essay by the due date. No late papers will be accepted; however, you may submit papers earlier. In fact, this is encouraged. Your MLA format 2-3 pages, body only, minimum 5-7 paragraphs, short story paper is due by the posted due date by 6:00 p.m.. Be sure to save in WORD, and your last name, first name; otherwise, one letter grade lower. If you would like to submit your paper earlier, that is fine. But no late papers will be accepted. “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is the short story I choose. Do not use AL, use your own w‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍ords.

Expert Solution

In the story by Kate Chopin, the author deftly employs plot, setting, symbolism, irony, characterization, and historical context to argue that Louise Mallard's emotional journey, from initial grief to a fleeting taste of newfound freedom, underscores the suffocating constraints imposed on women by 19th-century social norms, culminating in a tragic twist of fate that serves as a poignant commentary on the limitations of marriage.
