Using what you have learned from the resources in Section VI: Module 6 https://opened.tesu.edu/ethicalleadership/part/module-6/ , explain the role that values, choice, voice, and purpose played in the decisions the coach made. Then respond to the following questions derived from the case study:
· Clarifying Culture: What were the values espoused by the University and the program? Did thecoach’s actions demonstrate these values?
· Creating Community: Did the coach’s handling of the incident promote positive relationshipsbetween key stakeholders (players, staff, community, university)?
· Encouraging Ethical Conduct: Did the coach openly acknowledge that his decision was based in ethics and morality? Did he revisit with his team their code of conduct and their core values and acknowledge where he might not have followed it?
· Showing Discipline in One’s Role: Did the coach explicitly accept responsibility and show he understands what his role is in creating a culture that values honesty and respects women?
· Designing Ethical Systems: Did the coach’s actions set a positive precedent for other athletic departments to follow?
Reflect on your own ethical leadership philosophy and how you voice your values and use your voice. What might you have done if you were facing the same or a similar situation? How might actions aligned with your values have made for a more ethical outcome? [MO 6.1, MO 6.2, MO 6.3]
Values, Choice, Voice,
and Purpose; The chief football coach of Ohio State University, Urban Meyer,
came into a scenario where his values, ethics, and affiliation with the group were
questioned. Character and ideals radiate how a person is seen in their life (Ko
et al.). Coach Meyer attempted to instill in his players two basic ideals in
this situation. The first is respect for women, and the second is honesty.
However, in the scenario, Meyer was criticized for appearing to lack empathy
for the victim, Courtney, and for only apologizing to Courtney after being
prodded to do so during a chat with ESPN (Tangdall). This conduct demonstrates
the exact opposite of the ideals he upholds and may signal that he may work
with others to conceal problems inside the company. As such, this broke the
trust that the coach tried to foster, which, when called into doubt, is
difficult to regain after losing it.
