Cop 28 recently took place in
Dubai. The conference faced serious issues in terms of ethical Leadership and
within the body of participating countries issues arise between countries which
has to face consequences of climate change and rich industrialized countries.
1.Describe the ethical
dimensions of the issues raised with the conference.
(a)For Sheikh Al Jaber presidency
of COP 28.
(b)The issues in relation to
the “Loss and Damage Fund”.
2.The conference found a
compromise implementing tougher reduction on CO2 emissions but still allow
fossil fuels as energy providing resource. Please explain if this compromise is
ethical or unethical from your point of view and Sheikh Al Jaber’s presidency
of COP28.
For Jaber’s presidency of COP
28, impartiality was the primary ethical concern raised. According to the
UNFCC, the core principle of presidents of this conference and their team is to
ensure impartiality (Rowlatt, 2023). However, Jaber holds several positions in
the UAE that may present a conflict of interest while conducting his role as the
president of this conference. For instance there were concerns raised over
leaked documents that proved that Jaber was prepared and willing to make gas
and oil deals with foreign countries who were to attend the conference (Bakx,
2023). Generally, the primary ethical concern with Sheikh Al Jaber's presidency
was the conflict of interest presented by the other roles he played, which
included being a chief executive officer of a leading oil company in the UAE.
