In this comprehensive study, the
authors try to identify gaps in the existing literature on police violence (PV)
by inspecting psychological and neglect, bodily, and sexual violence committed
by the police. Using information from the 2017 Survey of Police–Public
Encounters, the examiner analyzes the relationships between different types of
PV and public perceptions of police trust, effectiveness, legitimacy, and overall
performance. The findings reveal significant and inverse associations between most
types of PV and positive police perceptions. Demographic factors, which include
age, gender, education, income, race/ethnicity, and nativity, further influence
these perceptions. The authors argue that their study contributes valuable
insights into how particular kinds of PV exposure shape diverse demographic
groups' perspectives on the police.
