According
to the article by Salar, Kiani, and Nasrin, a nurse’s main job is to administer
drugs to patients. As such, they are more prone to making medication errors
compared to doctors. Statistically, 39% of all medication errors are made by doctors,
38% by nurses and 23% by pharmacies (Salar et al., 2020). In addition, nurses
spend a third of their time administering drugs to patients, and most of the errors
happen when there is a disruption of duties, for instance, if a nurse is called
to administer drugs while taking care of a patient. Some of the causes for
medication errors are inexperienced nurses being allowed to administer drugs,
fatigue due to being overworked, long working shifts and sometimes double
shifts with no breaks in between and not reading labels carefully (Salar et
al., 2020). Therefore, most medication errors happen due to poor working conditions
and carelessness.
