Identify
and describe the four psychosocial elements outlined by Duchscher
and how they interlink in each stage of the transition model
According to the stages of
transition theory, Duchscher explains that the first 12 months of transition to
nursing is a process involving four steps: Orientation, being and knowing (Philip
et al., 2017). In the first stage of orientation, also known as the doing
stage, the new nurse anticipates what is expected of her, such as working long
hours. Then, she begins learning that her expectations are different from the
actual reality of nursing (Understanding
Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development. Verywell Mind, n.d). This stage is characterized by
doubt; for instance, the new nurse will distance themselves from serving
patients for fear of doing the wrong thing.
