You are writing for family nurse practitioner program.student FNP who will be going on clinical for 2nd semester and this question are asked based on your clinical experience. You have 7 week of clinical rotation/ practicum experience. They want you to write an answer for the question below in the RED that you will accomplish. In this practicum/ clinical. Each clinical day you encounter about 10 to 15 patients and you right their H&P you'd go through their history. All your patient is adult age 21 years and above.
Q1. Identify 5 personal objectives that you would like to accomplish for this practicum experience. These objectives should help guide your practicum experience.
The
objectives should be SMART - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant,
time-bound.
Remember this is 2nd course with clinical for student FNP
Make sure to use SMART
These are the set objectives I want to achieve during my clinical practice experience.
1.To network
During my time in clinical practice, I want to build meaningful professional relationships with the people I will be working alongside. This will help put my name out there when actively seeking jobs. In addition, by building a network with different people in the same field, I can be in the know when there are changes in different health care aspects, and I'll learn from them, which will improve my practical skills. By the end of my clinical practice, I want to have at least two contacts who I will be in active communication with.
2.To take on an active leadership role.
While working alongside and under professionals who have been there before me and have more experience, I hope to learn how to lead. For example, when the people I work with are not around or are busy with other patients, I can step in and make objective decisions after writing a conclusive H&P. This will help build my confidence .To do this, I will be active in volunteering to take on different tasks around my workplace and if I have not gotten the opportunity in a month’s time ,I will be active in requesting for one.
3.To gain knowledge
The main purpose of my clinical practice is to amass valuable knowledge which will carry me forth until I become a certified practitioner. I hope to participate in discussions with patients actively and be invited to watch or assist the practitioners I work with during different procedures. What we learn in school does not give us enough to experience what happens in a real-life situation, so this experience will help build my skills. I also hope to talk to different people in my field, ask about their experiences, learn where they went right or wrong, and learn from their experiences .I will write a journal to record my days and section a part of it for any new facts I learn along the way.
4.To find a balance between work and my time.
Our clinical practice will involve seeing 10-15 patients during our rotations which is very time-consuming. Therefore, I want to plan my time at work and home differently, so neither takes precedence over the other. At work, I wish to plan the time I can spend on every patient so all patients are catered to. At home, I plan to eat properly and get enough sleep because to care for my patients, I have to take care of myself first .I will make a planner for my week ,allocate at least 4 hours of sleeping time per day and 30 minutes off my working time for meals.
5. to make proper assessments.
While new to the experience, I hope I can make proper assessments of the patients while learning their medical history and during physical examination. I understand even simple mistakes could have dire consequences for patients, which is something I wish to avoid .I plan to have a chart with different H&P outcomes and the diagnoses that follow them ,that will help me in identifying the patients’ ailments. By the time my practice is coming to an end,I will have learned to make proper assessments without checking my chart.
