As part of this event, they are introducing the seniors to majors they may not have encountered in high school. They have asked you to come and speak to the students about the discipline of sociology. In your essay, discuss how you would explain sociology to this group. You should explain what it is, as well as give examples of the kinds of things sociologists study. Explain why they should take sociology when they go to college. In your answer, you must refer to FOUR specific examples of insights that come from sociological research, drawing from the textbook, documentaries, podcasts, and Palaces for the People. Clearly indicate what sources you are drawing from. Part II 100 points/Suggested Length: 1 page In class we have studied how the institutions (marriage/family, education, health/medicine) impact our communities. Many of the examples of social infrastructure in Palaces for the People relate to these institutions. Choose ONE of these institutions and discuss Klinenberg’‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍s analysis of how social infrastructure can reduce inequality, counteract polarization, and help build civic life in relation to that one institution. Be specific about examples he uses. Part III 100 points/Suggested Length: 1 page After taking this class, think about how an understanding of sociology will impact you in your future career. If you know what you want to do for a profession, focus on that. If you’re not sure (and it’s ok not to be sure!), pick a possible profession and focus on that. Part IV 25 points/Suggested Length: 1/2 page This essay should be a reflection on one other topic you have learned about in this course that was not addressed in the questions above. It can be related to a reading, documentary, podcast, or class lecture/discussion. Your answer should address what you learned, why you think it is important to the field of sociology, and why it resonated with you enough for you to choose it for this essay. Be clear about what materials (or which day’s class/es‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍) it is from.
