Assessment Tool Worksheet
For
this assignment, view all the videos and the case study listed below. Next,
after you view each one, list the appropriate assessment tool(s) you would use
for the provided client situation and population if you were the assigned
social worker.
Lastly, provide your reasoning for the assessment
tool you listed, citing two scholarly sources to support your reasoning:
Client
Situation and Population: Valerie
from “Getting Back to Shakopee” video (Topic 1 folder in MindTap) Native
American woman struggles with low self-esteem and alcoholism. Assessment
Tool: The person-in environment assessment Reasoning:
The surrounding systems of Valerie must be examined because it is clear there
are things making her depressed. In this cases, open ended questions should
be used. Consequently, face to face communication should be examined to check
if there is anything that is left out. |
Client
Situation and Population: Marta
Ramirez case study (located in Chapter 1 of the textbook and in Topic 4
folder in MindTap) Hispanic lower socioeconomic status woman. Assessment
Tool: The person-in-environment assessment Reasoning:
The surrounding of Marta has affected her negatively. She is scared to seek
help to treat her health issues because of her immigration status. This has a
reverse implication where a person acts and responds to the external
surrounding and the quality of these actions impact one responses in the
external world (Simmons, 2012). |
Client
Situation and Population: Carl
video (Topic 7 folder in MindTap) Middle-aged Caucasian heroin addict. Assessment
Tool: The person-in-environment assessment Reasoning:
This assessment would play a vital
role in helping Carl evaluate his support systems. He is aware of his problem
and needs assistance. This is something that people find it hard to admit.
Carl is aware that he is a drug addict and has the desire to change for the
better. Therefore, he could draw his motivations from the positive outcomes
of his actions. In such a case, all that Carol needs is self-understanding
and inspiration. |
Client
Situation and Population: Greg
video (Topic 3 folder in MindTap) Young Caucasian adult arrested for DUI. Assessment
Tool: Strengths-based assessment Reasoning:
First Greg needs to understand the situation and admit to it. Therefore
building a good rapport would play a vital role. Additionally a good rapport
will have a successful outcome (Allott, et.al). This kind of assessment is
better because he is motivated by his job and he is concerned about it. |
Client
Situation and Population: Rosetta
video (Topic 5 folder in MindTap) Middle-aged African American female with
young adult lesbian daughter. Assessment
Tool: The person-in-environment assessment Reasoning:
Rosetta is an African American single mother whose daughter is a lesbian. For
this case, she need an environment where she will feel comfortable talking to
someone and express herself. A collaborative interaction is important in this
case so that she will avoid judgement of values, customs, and self-beliefs,
lastly, open-ended questions are encouraged in this case. Listening and
empathy skills are important in this case. |

Now that you have completed the “Assessment Tool Worksheet,” explain how you selected the assessment tools for two of the cases;
In the case of Carl, who is a
heroin addict, I chose the Person-in-environment assessment since I believe
there is an influence from the environment that influences his heroin addiction (Tyler, n.d.). Assessing Carl’s
environment will help in also understanding the factors that Carl should look
out for that could derail the process of getting over his addiction. Carl has a
positive attitude toward change, and Person-in-environment will help identify
the people who would support him through his recovery journey. For the case of
Greg, I choose a strength-based assessment since Greg is yet to admit the
situation he is in. Focusing on his positive attributes, Greg will make him
realize the gaps in his life and lead him to discover the factors attributing
to the negative side of his life ("Strengths-Based Interviews -
Expert Advice and Practice Q's", n.d.). Greg is also motivated in his
occupation. Greg’s concern about his job makes it necessary to lead him to
understand and accept his situation.
