One ethicist in the field of business ethics states, "Business ethics should be grounded in deontology more than utilitarianism." What does this mean? Reflect on the definitions and application of these two distinct ethical frameworks. Why do you think this expert proposes this view? Consider the case studies you have read. Think how you would make critical decisions.Do you you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain. Feel free to add another ethical perspective to the discussion.
The
Business ethics of a firm control its operation and activities. It involves the
integration of the principle of legal compliance with conformity to moral
standards. The utilitarian framework states that the rightness or wrongness of
an act is dependent on its consequences. Thus, it maximizes on the utility of
an action (Malakhova et.al., 2017). This premise implies that a business can
get away with being unethical so long as the consequences of their actions can
be considered right. It is the classic case of ‘robbing peter to pay Paul’. For
example, a Business may choose not to remit taxes and instead use that money to
help the needy in the society. Whereas the act of helping is not wrong, the act
of tax evasion is. Therefore, this is not the nest approach to be implemented
in a firm.
