TOPIC: Your self-assessment
will be on your ability to respond to learning outcome: The Dental
Hygiene Paradigm (four concepts). I am a dental hygiene student
in my first year, so ensure it makes sense.
* You are not going
into detail talking about the dental hygiene paradigm, you simply need to write
on your own ability (a reflection) of the learning outcome: the Dental Hygiene
Paradigm
*Write in your own words
*Use lecture provided for any information, no outside sources allowed thus no
references*
*Create one (1) SMART learning goal and action plan based
on your reflection. Pdfs provided to help you understand what you need to do in
order to create the small goal
MAKE SURE YOU’RE ANSWERING EACH SECTIONS OF THE FOUR R’S AND ANSWERING
DIRECTLY. DO NOT GO OFF TOPIC.

Revisit
In week four’s lecture (September 27th 2022), I learned about Membership Associations and Regulatory Bodies. This lecture was informative because it gave me a detailed account of the development of dental hygiene and in the process, demonstrated the difference between membership associations and regulatory bodies. From what I learned and understood is that membership associations such as the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) involved dental hygienists who often received training, resources, research, quality assurance, manpower and education, all of which would promote patients' oral health and enact preventative measures. On the other hand, a regulatory body, such as the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP), often fights for the public to ensure that dental hygiene achieves its set goals and that dental hygienists follow the set standards. Key points that I’ve taken from this learning activity is that membership associations are vital to the development of a profession, that regulatory bodies are necessary for ensuring there are set standards for every profession, and that dental hygiene has been recognized as crucial to the patient's health.
React
I thought dental hygiene had been part of mainstream dentistry, only to learn that it was a separate profession with roots in the early 20th century. I believe that the distinction is great because it shows the importance of membership association as it has enabled the profession to be accepted in mainstream healthcare delivery. This learning activity helped demonstrate the importance of membership associations in supporting professionals and the role of regulators in ensuring that patients get quality care. I feel happy knowing the great advancements that dental hygiene has made through the years and the impact on human oral health. However, I am worried that there is less emphasis on what it takes to be an effective dental hygienist.
Relate
I've
often wondered who sets the standards that oral healthcare professionals must
adhere to, and I've since learnt that regulatory bodies, such as the BCCOHP, are
responsible. I have also learned that upon completion of my studies, it is
recommended to join the CDHA as it supports everyone's well-being and helps
each member carry out their duties more effectively by providing resources,
training, and assessments. Additionally, this learning activity challenged my
pre-existing belief that professional membership associations—such as the
Canadian Dental Association (CDA) and CDHA, work solely to support each other.
However, it is now clear that these associations put their respective members’ interests
first. Nonetheless, membership associations are excellent resources for finding
studies and information on evidence-based practice. As a student, I will always
consider these associations as external libraries with resources that will aid
in my learning objectives.
Respond
The
main takeaway from this learning activity is that oral health professionals
must follow set standards established by regulatory bodies and that they should
join membership associations for further professional development. Effective
care cannot be provided solely on the basis of what you’ve learned in school.
Therefore, in order to learn more about both organizations, I will browse their
websites which will help me as a student to supplement my studies and further
support my career development upon completion of my studies
SMART GOAL
In order to increase my knowledge about the CDHA and BCCOHP, I will spend 10 minutes browsing each website every weekend and write in my journal in bullet point format about something new I’ve learned. This action will be undertaken on Monday October 3rd 2022 and will be fully implemented into my practice until the last day of this program (April 2024).

The main paradigms of the dental hygiene procedure involve considering the client, the intervention's environment, the client's oral health and general well-being, and the client's hygiene actions. The client refers to the person, group, family or community from different cultural groups, ages, and economic stuses seeking dental hygiene services. The dentist should assess, diagnose, plan, evaluate, and document the client's dental hygiene actions to help in devising the most appropriate intervention. The dentist should also consider how the client's dental hygiene actions are influenced by environmental conditions such as culture, geographic, physical, economic, educational and ethical factors. The last paradigm is the client's wellbeing and oral health which could be determined by biological, developmental, spiritual or psychological factors. Thus, selecting a conducive environment to engage the client to establish their dental hygiene practices and oral health to devise an appropriate treatment is crucial. Therefore, a dentist should consider the client's healthcare needs to help them in accomplishing their needs such as health promotion, therapy or prevention of a disease
React
Initially I thought that dental hygiene care involved the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental diseases. However, the readings provided an insight on the major paradigms enhancing my understanding of the importance of considering other factors such as the environmental conditions and their impact to the client's health, and interelation between overall wellbeing and oral health. Also, each paradigm plays a critical role in enhancing the care's outcome and hence the dentist should ensure that each conce comprehensively analyzed to help in the intervention process. The reading is comprehensive and gives exhaustive details on each paradigm enhancing ones understanding.
Relate
The readings significantly
impacted my dental hygiene understanding and how I would offer clients quality
services. The reading challenged me to apply the paradigm concepts and
step-by-step procedures in my career by learning the importance to assess
different aspects of the client's well-being that could impact their oral
health. In the future, I would use this information to educate my peers,
family, and colleagues on the dental hygiene process and analysis of the
environmental, oral health, client dental hygiene needs, and their dental
hygiene actions to enhance their oral health.
Respond
Effective assessment highly
guarantees accurate diagnosis, treatment, and prevention enhancing the client's
oral health. Thus, it is crucial to
master the dental hygiene paradigm concepts to enhance intervention outcomes. I
will incorporate this process in a future practice setting to offer quality
care to clients and help them comprehend dental hygiene. Effective integration
of the four paradigms plays a critical role in enhancing the client’s oral
health.
SMART GOAL
To increase my knowledge and
expertise in providing dental hygiene services by applying the paradigm
concepts outlined in the reading, I will commit to reading and internalizing
the concepts for two consecutive weeks. Upon mastering the skills, I will
implement the concept in personal dental hygiene habits and enlighten
colleagues and families on the importance of maintaining dental hygiene.
