Systematic review appraisal assignment instructions: Critical appraisal is the process of systematically examining research evidence to judge its trustworthiness, its value and relevance in a particular context. It allows clinicians to use research evidence reliably and efficiently. Systematic reviews may, or may not, include meta-analysis of the primary random control trials (RCTs) identified. Although systematic reviews of RCTs with meta-analysis are often said to provide the most compelling evidence of effectiveness and causality, not all systematic reviews are of the highest methodological quality. A framework for assessing systematic reviews should be used to help assess the quality of a systematic reviews. Using the JBI Systematic Review appraisal tool below, please analyze the systematic review study you chose related to your PICOT question. In a separate word document, address the following main points below. Article to use -- Interventions for paediatric surgery patients with comorbid autism spectrum disorder: a systematic literature review As you are analyzing the systematic review article, focus on the following: Topic/Purpose Method/Qualitative Design Data collection/Coding Results/data analysis Discussion/Recommendations for Future Research Evaluate the overall strength of the study And Fill out the JBI questionnaire
Topic or purpos; Is the review question clearly and explicitly stated? The purpose of the research was to survey whether proper management practices for pediatrics patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who had undergone surgery were adopted (Koski et.al., 2016). Therefore, the research has clearly stated the review question.
Method or qualitative design; Were the inclusion criteria appropriate for the review question? The research to understand whether there were appropriate management practices for pediatric patients who had undergone surgery. However, the research focused on articles that discussed perioperative interventions and excluded articles that focused on the use of surgical interventions and sedations in a perioperative setting (Koski et.al., 2016). Therefore, the inclusion criteria is inappropriate for the review question.
3. Was the search strategy appropriate? The study used several electronic databases such as OVID SR, Medline, PsycINFO, AMED, PubMed and Google scholar to review articles published between 1990 and 2016. The articles selected were relevant because they discussed both ASD and perioperative intervention techniques (Koski et.al., 2016). Therefore, the search strategy for the research was appropriate. Were the sources and resources used to search for studies adequate? The research used peer reviewed journals and journals that contained case studies of ASD cases and perioperative interventions for pediatric patients. In addition, publications that focused on surgical interventions and sedations methods in the perioperative setting were excluded (Koski et.al., 2016). Therefore, the sources used for the research are appropriate.
