Dear
Writer, Watch the short documentary 'Utopia' SBS (2017) on Youtube. Link to
video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyI4HcBTGjE Identify
ONE social determinant evident in the video, and discuss how
it influences the health and well-being of individuals AND members of the
Utopia community. Does it relate with any other social determinants? Thank you
Social determinants influence
how people in a particular society live and affect the quality of life,
outcomes, and risks associated with the people. These are apparent in society,
and the different conditions influence how people live differently and the
quality of their life. Some social determinants include; access to health care,
socioeconomic status, education, physical environment, employment, and so forth.
These determinants are evident in the Utopia community that is depicted in the documentary.
The most evident social determinant is the socioeconomic status of the
individuals in Utopia, which has greatly affected the general well-being of the
individuals, influencing the health status among the individuals in the Utopian
community.
The people of the Utopian community have poor living
conditions due to poverty. Such is evidenced by the shanty houses which are
depicted throughout the documentary. Individuals in this community share
bedding which is limited and very unhygienic. These individuals cannot afford
better housing due to their low economic status. From the documentary, one
learns that most people are traditional healers, and one interviewee explained
that most people spend their day doing nothing (SBS The Feed, 2017, Utopia:” Australia’s dirty secret” or
misunderstood community?). Hence, they lack a source of income to help them
fend for themselves and access better living conditions. Such poor living
conditions make them susceptible to many diseases, and such is reinforced
throughout the documentary. Also, they lack access to clean water and hygienic
conditions, which the dirty food store depicts, and such conditions make them
susceptible to many contaminated diseases.
Also, the low economic status of the people of the Utopian
community limits their ability to access education. The documentary explains
that most children do not go to school, hence increasing their illiteracy
levels, which helps promote the vicious cycle of poverty in the community. The
living conditions in the Utopian community are horrible, and they have limited
access to health care, worsening many individuals' well-being. The Utopian
community's social and economic status relates to other factors such as
education, employment, access to health care, and physical environment (SBS The
Feed, 2017, Utopia:” Australia’s dirty
secret” or misunderstood community?). The people of Utopian are living in
poverty, hence the limited access to quality education, poor health care
services, and unemployment which makes their physical environment look bad.
Hence, these social determinants correlate in one way or another.
Utopia is a historical community that should be preserved
and maintained for future generations. Hence, the community leaders, the
Utopian country, and relevant stakeholders must work together to bring glory to
the community and its people. The government of Australia should allocate funds
to the Utopian community to help build better housing, improve their access to
health care and education services, and create employment opportunities to help
improve their living conditions and help maintain the scenic beauty of their
surroundings.
