As a
leader/manager, one circumstance you may encounter is the necessity to
integrate or merge two organizational units. This can be a stressful period
which, if not properly managed, can cause a good deal of tension and/or
conflict, often leading to decreased organizational performance. Consider that
senior management has dictated that your unit will merge with another manager’s
unit over the next three months. You will be the leader of the newly merged
group. The previous manager will remain on your staff.
Senior management has asked you to submit a merger plan. (If you have
previously been involved in an actual unit merger, please share the
organizational dynamics you experienced as well as any lessons learned.)
Discussion Question
1.What
are the key issues/challenges/opportunities you face, both short- and
long-term?
2.Describe three key elements
of your merger plan and explain the sources of power that will be available to
you upon which you will draw to help achieve a successful merger.
2.The problems of
integrating two organizational divisions include employee resistance to change,
which results in certain employees being resistant to the changes brought about
by the merger. This is attributed to how the staff will be unwilling to adopt another
leader or alter their standard operating procedures, which harms performance
(Desai, 2017). Additionally, since one manager becomes a staff member, merging
may cause manager-to-manager friction. The staff manager can feel discriminated
against for losing control, while their divergent viewpoints could lead to
confrontations among the group. Increasing employee teamwork is one of the
benefits of integrating organizational units (Kroon & Noorderhaven, 2018).
This can be achieved by improving problem-solving skills resulting from
enhanced collaboration, which boosts unit production. Second, combining the
units fosters innovative thinking and creativity since numerous ideas are
exchanged on a single platform, honing the team's talents (Kroon & Noorderhaven,
2018). Long-term innovation and originality will result in realizing the unit's
goals and more.
