Rolena Adorno writes “the life story of Guaman Poma illustrates the challenges that arose in the early colonial period for members of the first generation of ethnic Andeans born in Peru after the Spanish conquest.” What does she mean by that? What particular challenges did‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍ Guaman Poma (and his family) face as a result of Spanish colonialism and how did they respond? 2. How would you compare/contrast Juana Payco’s case ("Mestiza in clothes of an Indian") to the cases of Doña Ana María and/or Doña Isabel Sisa? (Might think here about ethnic identity, access to authority, position in colonial hierarchy, role played by locat‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍ion, etc)

Expert Solution

In her comment on Guaman Poma, Rolena Adorno emphasizes the difficulties faced by the first generation of Andeans to be born in Peru following the Spanish conquest. The devaluation of Guaman Poma's family's indigenous ancestry during the colonial era presented serious difficulties. They changed status, primarily as a result of the initiatives taken during Viceroy Francisco de Toledo's leadership. The privileges of the mitmaqkuna, including Guaman Poma's forefathers, were changed, and this change resulted in the segregation of ethnic groupings. The Spanish began to view the Incas, who had originally sent them with particular tasks, as newcomers or forasteros.
